Dental (Porphyromonas) Vaccine

Periodontal disease is inflammation (which is called gingivitis) and infection (which is called periodontitis) that occur around your dog’s teeth—just like the problems that can affect your own teeth. Recommendations to control and prevent gingivitis and periodontitis have traditionally included brushing your dog’s teeth to remove plaque and regular dental cleanings performed by your veterinarian. Now there is a new tool in your arsenal—a vaccine that fights the bad bacteria that can destroy your dog’s teeth.

HOW DO I KNOW IF MY DOG HAS PERIODONTITIS?
Your dog will likely show some common signs that his or her teeth are being affected
by plaque and calculus buildup. If you are concerned about any of the following signs, you
should tell your veterinarian, who can help you develop an individualized dental health care program:

- Bad breath
- Red or swollen gums
- A yellow–brown crust near the gum line
- Loose teeth (or teeth have already been extracted)
- Decreased appetite or weight loss because your dog has difficulty chewing

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP PREVENT PERIODONTITIS IN MY DOG?

- Brush Your Dog’s Teeth—This is a very important part of keeping your dog’s mouth in a healthy state. By brushing your dog’s teeth, you are helping to stop plaque buildup. Be sure to use a toothbrush and toothpaste designed for dogs. Because some dogs are poor candidates for toothbrushing—no matter how hard you may try—there are other products that can help prevent the buildup of plaque on your dog’s teeth. Ask your veterinarian for some guidance on what your options are.

- Have Your Dog’s Teeth Cleaned Regularly—Visit your veterinarian regularly, and make sure that a dental exam is part of your dog’s regular physical examination program. When your veterinarian cleans your dog’s teeth, he or she will make sure your dog is pain free during the procedure (by placing your dog under anesthesia) and after the procedure (by giving your dog pain medication and an antiinflammatory drug that prevents inflammation of the gums).

- Have Your Veterinarian Administer a New Dental Vaccine—A new vaccine, the Porphyromonas Vaccine available from Pfizer Animal Health, helps prevent periodontitis in dogs by reducing changes that can occur to the tooth structures. Your dog will receive two doses that are given 3 weeks apart. Then your veterinarian will discuss with you how often he or she believes your dog may need additional booster vaccinations.

Introducing once-daily CERENIA Tablets—developed just for dogs

  • The first FDA-approved medicine that prevents motion sickness in dogs
  • Safe and effective
  • Recommended for dogs 16 weeks of age and older
  • Available by prescription from your veterinarian

If you want to take your dog along on trips, vacations…sometimes just to visit friends nearby—but can't because your canine companion gets sick when he travels, then read on. Now there's CERENIA, a new medicine that prevents vomiting caused by motion sickness.

Did you know?

Motion sickness is very common. Pfizer Animal Health talked to many dog owners and found that about 1 in 6 dogs gets sick from traveling. That's 17% of all dogs!

Just for dogs!

CERENIA was developed just for dogs. It is a safe and effective medicine that prevents vomiting caused by motion sickness, and it works very well — a success rate of up to 93%!

Here are answers to questions you may have about CERENIA.

How does CERENIA work?

Dogs get motion sickness either because they are anxious while traveling or because their balance is affected by movement. In either case, CERENIA blocks vomiting signals, which prevents dogs from getting sick.

How should I give CERENIA Tablets to prevent motion sickness?

Do not feed your dog for 1 hour before giving CERENIA. The best time to give CERENIA is 2 hours before traveling, with a small amount of food. Do not wrap the tablets tightly in fatty food such as cheese or meat, since this may keep the tablets from dissolving and delay the effect of CERENIA. Follow your veterinarian's instructions for giving CERENIA to your dog before traveling.

How often can I give CERENIA to my dog to prevent motion sickness?

You can give your dog CERENIA once a day for up to 2 days in a row.

Can CERENIA be used along with medicines for other conditions?

CERENIA has been given with many other commonly used medicines. But before treating your dog with CERENIA, be sure your veterinarian is aware of all medicines your dog is receiving.

Does CERENIA have any side effects?

Most dogs do very well on CERENIA. But as with all medicines, some dogs may experience side effects. Side effects are rare with CERENIA, but when they do occur, the most common ones are excessive drooling, lethargy, lack of appetite, and diarrhea. A few dogs may vomit after taking the medicine. Giving CERENIA with a small amount of food will help avoid this. Remember not to wrap the tablets tightly, so they can dissolve properly.

Is CERENIA right for all dogs?

Use of CERENIA has not been tested in: female dogs that are breeding, pregnant, or are nursing; dogs that have swallowed foreign objects; and dogs that have eaten poisonous substances. Caution should be used in giving CERENIA to dogs with liver problems. CERENIA is recommended for dogs 16 weeks and older. The most common side effects seen with CERENIA are excessive drooling, lethargy, lack of appetite, and diarrhea. If these signs are observed, stop CERENIA and call your veterinarian. For more information, read the full prescribing information.

CERENIA is recommended for dogs 16 weeks of age and older. It should not be given if your dog is pregnant, nursing, or breeding. Use with caution if your dog has a known liver problem.

Will CERENIA make my dog sleepy?

CERENIA is non-sedating, so most dogs won't feel tired or drowsy after taking it.

How can I find out more about CERENIA?

For additional questions about CERENIA or your dog's health, be sure to talk to your veterinarian. And check back here for an expanded, informational website in the months to come.

CERENIA once a day, and go!

It can be distressing to leave your dog home or in a kennel—now you don't have to. With CERENIA, your next trip should be a lot more pleasant and enjoyable for both you and your dog. Safe travels!
